TEMPERANCE UNION.

A meeting of the Auckland* Women's Christian Temperance Union was held in the Y.W.C.A. on Tuesday afternoon, Mrs. John Cook presiding. A visitor from Timaru was welcomed to the meeting. Owing to the speaker, Mrs. Milne, meeting with an accident Mr 3. Cook gave an interesting and graphic report of the recent conference of the National Council of Women held in Gisborne. The union has presented eight charts to the State schools in the city area, illustrating lessons on temperance and hygiene. Deep re. grcfr was expressed that tho Government had lifted the ban on art unions.

Resolutions were forwarded • to Mr. Parry, M.P. for Auckland Central, dealing with the following matters: —Increase in the amount earned by a widow receiving a pension;' that a woman separated from her husband should be entitled to receive tho family allowance; that the marriageable age fo> minors bo not less than 16 years; that a wife should he able to obtain an order of attachment on her husband's earnings in the same manner aS attach ment on wages, disclosures in regard to sick nurses should be investigated and that one day in seven bo granted off duty; a chair of midwifery to bo established at a medical school, in view of tho high rate of maternal mortality; a compulsory Dominion superannuation scheme be considered by tho Government; the amount be increased to 5s per week in family Allowance Act for each eligible child; special reforms in connection with mental patients, such as the establishment of observation wards in public hospitals, where cases may be thoroughly investigated, and that two medical certificates bo obtained before tho patients bo sent to a mental hospital, also that a magistrate should at tend at tho hospital to satisfy himself before signing reception order; the demand for women police; that, in affiliation cases and cases involving domestic relations the public bo excluded from the Court.
