YEAR'S SURPLUS £37,000,000.
RECORD INCOME TAX YIELD
WASHINGTON. July 2. " The United States starts the new fiscal year of 1929 50 with a surplus of £37.000.000 and a public debt of under £3,400.000.000--the lowest since the war," said the Secretary of the Treasury, Mr. Andrew Mellon, to day. Customs duties yielded £120,000,000. " All the Government finances are generally highly satisfactory," added Mr. MeDi'ii. Income tax receipts have grown to £'140,000.000- a record figure." This is chiefly attributable to (lie widespread prosperity and the profits of last vear's bull stock market.
