William Alexander Walt was born in Victoria in 1871, and entered the Victorian Parliament as a Nationalist in 1097 a* member for Melbourne East, lie was Postmaster-General, 1899, Stale Treasurer, 1909-12, and Premier, 1&12-13 and 1911. lie entered the Federal House in 1914, and was Minister of Works and Railways and Treasurer. He was act-ing-Prime Minister, 1918-19. while Mr. W. M. Hughes was in Europe. From 1923 to 1926 ho was Speaker of the House of Representatives.
