MAKERS OF AUCKLAND

GREAT MEN IN THE PAST.

BUILDERS OF INSTITUTIONS

A series of articles entitled "Makers oF Auckland," will begin with to-morrow's issue of the Hr.n.u.n. They deal with men who had the principal hand in laying the foundations of the city and district, from the early "forties" to comparatively recent times. Thfe endeavour of the writer has been to place on record the services rendered to Auckland by its principal founders, and the builders of its institutions, and make known to the present generation personalities who were powers in the land in their day, but who are now, except to people of advanced years, mere names.

Auckland has had its great men from Ilobson, Selwyn and Grey onwards, ami there is much in their careers that calls for grateful remembrance by those, who have followed them. No attempt has been made in the way of character sketches, but the articles seek (o commemorate the part taken by public men, and the business men of the early days, in laying the foundation of the community of to-day. Incidentally, the articles will to a certain extent epitomise the history of the city and provincial district, and indicate to whom we are mainly indebted for the foundation of the principal local government bodies, the financial and commercial corporations, and other main features of the Auckland we now know, the leading men of early professional and business life in the city, the growth of educational and cultural institutions, and the establishment of early industries.

Without professing to be exhaustive, the series will render credit to most of the men who can be considered to have been the "makers" of Auckland, and throw a considerable amount of light upon the conditions of the first 50 years of settlement on the shores of the Waitcmata.
