ROAD AND DRAINAGE WORK. The estimates for the current year were agreed to by New Lynn Borough Council at its meeting on Monday evening The Mayor, Mr. C. F. Gardner, presided

The rates to be struck are as follows; — General, 4 13-16 d in the pound; hospital and chant able aid, 7-8(1; street lighting, 3-8 d; antecedent liability loan interest, 3-32 d; special reserves loan, 5-32 d; stormwater drainago loan, 5-32 d; water reticulation loan, Ud; main highway loan, jjd; footpath formation loan, 5-32 d; streets improvements loan, 7-16 d; sewage drain age loan, 3d; riding loan (Kelston), 4 15-16(1.

Compared with last year the general rate shows an increase of ljd in the pound and the drainage loan rate is increased by 2d in the pound. The increase in the general rate is due to the need of making provision for the streets maintenance estimates, totalling £3939, as against £2917 last year. The largo increase in tho drainage loan rate is accounted for by tho fact that sewerage reticulation is nearing completion. The traffic inspector reported that to date 346 motor diving licences had been issued.

The noxious weeds inspector reported that, generally speaking owners of properties on which noxious weeds had accumulated were complying with his instructions to clear their properties. The council decided that where weeds were not being cleared final notices should be sent, failing compliance with which prosecutions would follow.

A bus-driver drew the council's attention to the difficulty he had in directing passengers owing to the absence of street name-plates in tho district. The council decided to inform the driver that the question was already receiving the attention of tho council. In connection with the recent proposal to establish an agricultural high school somewhere between Avondale and Henderson, a letter was received from the local school committee to tho effect that 20 local pupils would bo willing to enrol in such a school.
