AMATEUR ATHLETICS.

AUCKLAND CLUB'S EVENTS

REAPPEARANCE OF VETERAN. Another of the AucKland Amateui Athletic Club's winter competitions was successfully conducted at the Domain last Saturday, when a record field of 22 harriers faced the starter in the three miles steeplechase, comprising five and a-half laps of the Domain course For a change the footing was excellent for runners, and good times were registered all round. The 75yds. sprint was run in two heats, as usual, the winners being Montgomery and Tarbctt, both doing 8s with an assisting wind. In the final A. Clark led a bunched field at. the 50yds. mark, and looked a sure winner. However, from this point Montgomery came through with an inspired dash, and, hurling himself at the tape, gained the verdict by 2ft. from Clark, who just beat Tarbctt by inches. Crum and F. L. Whittcn were absentees when a large field started in the steeplechase, in which the runners, although affected by a strong easterly wind, were favoured with a springy footing that was productive of last running. The limit men, Clark, MeNiel and \\ hitten, were the early pacemakers, and alternatively held the lead for three laps. Thou, however, Ileushall came into prominence, and, gaining the lead, lie soon opened a good gap on the rest ol the field. With two nnle.'i covered the hackinarkers had caught (ho middle men, although I heir chances of catching Heushall looked remote. Such proved the case, for, running strongly, tho latter held his advantage and came home, a good 40yds. ahead of Savidan, who was in turn about syds. ahead of Scown. Dowlc finished fourth and was followed by Barker, Clark and MeNiel in that order.

Uunning for the first, time in five weeks llenshall put up a line performance and showed form that, should give him an excellent chance <,f retaining the representative honours he gained last .year. Savidan ran his usual sterling race, while his easy action suggested that his short spell has had the desired effect. Scown, Kelts and Uarkcr ran well, and all three should make bold bids for the team for Dnncdin. Tho veteran J. Tipping reappeared at the sports on Saturday and made his presence felt by winning both the field events,

The Otago Association has now definitely decided on August 31 as the date for the harrier championship.
