VALUELESS CHEQUES.
BUSINESS MEN DEFRAUDED
FOUR CHARGES ADMITTED.

A commercial traveller, William Augustino Lagan, aged 58, pleaded guilty before Air. F. W. Platts, S.M., in the Hamilton Magistrate's Court to-day to four charges of committing falso pretences by issuing valueless cheques in Auckland, Ashburton, Napier and Nelson, for sums totalling £49 17s. Detective-Sergeant Thompson said Lagan had visited various towns and, giving fictitious names, bad had no difficulty in passing off valueless cheques to foolish business people. Accused ramo from a good family, and up to June last bo bad borno a good character. 110 said bo had been unable to got work, and being in want of money ho bad resorted to the use of valueless cheques as a means of obtaining some. Sinco his arrest Lagan bad given the polico every assistance, ilo was at present on remand to the Supremo Court, and would come up for sentence in that Court on another charge on July 20.
Tho accused was sentenced to three months' imprisonment on one charge, and was convicted and discharged on the others.
