OPPOSITION TO ART UNIONS

SUNDAY EVENING PICTURES.

The quarterly meeting of the Auckland Methodist Central Circuit was held at tho Pitt Street Church on Monday, the Rev. \V. Walker presiding over a large attendance. Mr. J. Maginness, senior circuit steward, welcomed Mr. Walker to his firs I quarterly meeting in tho circuit. Satisfactory progress was reported concerning the work in tho six churches of tho circuit. A committee was appointed to consider publishing a circuit magazine. Questions of public importance wero discussed by the meeting, which unanimously carried a resolution against any legislation for an increase in the facilities for gambling. Tho Rev. T. 1!. B. Woolloxall mover]: "That this quarterly meeting of tho Auckland Methodist Central Circuit greatly regrets lhab the Minister of Internal Affairs has removed the ban from so-called art, unions. ]t emphatically protests against any action of the Government in increasing the facilities for gambling." A protest against the opening of picture theatres on Sundays was made by the Rev. W. Rowe. While endorsing tho laudable object for which pictures were screened in certain city and suburban theatres on Sunday evenings ho regretted that picture halls were opened on tho special Sunday set apart to express thanks for the recovery of the King. He felt that tho opening of theatres in the name of benevolence would lead to a. demand for Sunday pictures for commercial purposes. A resolution on the above lines, and urging tho city and suburban local bodies to rcfuso futuro applications for Sunday programmes, was carried unanimously.

An evangelical campaign is lo bo held iu the circuit churches during September.

THE ONEHUNGA CIRCUIT.

AN EVANGELISTIC MISSION

A sound financial position was disclosed at tho quarterly meeting of the Onehunga Methodist Circuit on "Monday evening, the Rev. F. E. Leadley, superintendent of the circuit, presiding. The income for the quarter was >-144 and the expenditure £142. The circuit's allocation for fo'.fign missions is £125.

Mr. Leadlev intimated his willingness fo remain in tho circuit for another year if tho conference approved. He also stated that, assisted l>y other speakers, lie proposed to hold an evangelistic mission next mouth. '
