A preliminary rolnrn of revenue from taxation in the last financial year lias been compiled by the Government Statistician, the results being shown in comparison with (ho. final figures for preceding years, as follows:

Of the amount shown under the heading of motor vehicles taxation for 1928-29 approximately £BOO,OOO represents proceeds of motor spirit taxation, £200,000 tyro tax, and £240,000 fees, etc., under the Motor Vehicles Act. In tho por.tion of 1927-28 during which the petrol tax was in force, the yield from this source amounted to £143,516.

'l he proceeds of motor taxation are paid to the Main Highways Hoard, except that portion of tho petrol tax allocated to boroughs. Excluding this special taxation, tho total of general taxes in 1928-29 was £16,589,558, as compared with £16,428,668 in 1927-28, and £16,851,455 in 1926-27.

The Statistician's report states that the total taxation was equivalent to £l2 4s 4d per head cf t lie mean population including -Maoris, as compared with .Cll 17s 7d in tho previous year, and £l2 5s 6d in 1926-27.

The per capita charge exceeded £l2 for the,first time in 1919-20, when it was £l3 lis Id, and reached the abnormal level of £l7 14s 4d in tho following year. It has been less than £l2 since then only in 1922-23 and 1927-28.
