While destroying white ants with petrol at the Whitfield Barracks, Kowloon—on the mainland opjiosito HongkongSignalman White, of tho Hongkong detachment Royal Corps of Signallers, became enveloped in flames through the cureless dropping of a match hy one of the workers. White was removed immediately to tho military hospital, hut he succumbed to his injuries. The unfortunate man was due to go back to England by the next transport leaving Hongkong.
