TOWN CLERK RESUMES DUTY.
[BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] PUKEKOHE, Monday.
The town clerk of Pukekoho, Mr. J. F. Deane, has resumed duty after seven months in hospital. At a special meeting of tlio Borough Council this evening a welcome was extended to him by tho Mayor, Mr. John Moutley. Tho council placed on record its appreciation of the Mayor's action in carrying out additional duties during tho clerk's absence. Tho meeting considered tlio question of proceeding with preliminary steps for taking ;i poll on tlio proposal to borrow a further £6OOO for permanent road and footpath work. The Mayor explained that of £3379 estimated to bo required for road and street works in the current year a sum of £1348 was covered by tho loan proposal. Thus tho carrying oi tho loan would enable tho council to rcduco tlio rates by probably 3-8 d in tlio pound. In order that tho striking of tho rate should not bo dolayed, tho council, whilo awaiting tlio np proval of tho Local Government Loans Board, could savo time by proceeding with tho formalities. Tho council decided that preliminary steps should bo takon for holding tho poll in about five weeks.
