DETERMINED SUICIDE.
MAN BLOWN TO PIECES. SAD DISCOVERY BY SON. fllV TELEGRAPH.—-OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WHANGAREI, Monday. By placing a detonator under his body and lighting tho fuse Edmund Hayes, aged 48, a recent arrival from England, committed suicide on a property adjoining that of Mr. J. E. Lord, at Puwera, on Saturday afternoon. His body was blown to pieces. Hayes, who was a retired coal merchant, tamo from England in April with his son, aged 14 years, and was working for Mr. Lord, meaning eventually to take up farming and then bring out his wife and remaining three children. On Saturday afternoon Mr. Lord and the son were at work on tho farm when deceased camo down at about 4.15 o'clock and entered some scrub on another paddock. His son called out to him, but on receiving no answer went over to look for him. The son crossed the fence and was just entering the bush when he heard an explosion and discovered bis father's death. For somo time deceased had been complaining of headaches. At the inquest yesterday morning a verdict of suicide while in an unsound slate of mind was returned.
