SEQUEL TO POLICE RAID

Fines totalling £250 wero imposed on William Burke, farmer, of Grove Hush, in (lie Police Court (his afternoon on two charges of having spirits in his possession on which full duty had not heen paid and for having on his premises apparatus .suitable for distilling. Accused pleaded guilty. Yesterday afternoon a visit was paid by Senior-Sergeant Fox, Sergeant Abel and Constables Beadle and Nesbit to a farmhouse in the Grove Bush district. There was no one in the house at the time of tho visit and it, as well as two nearby sheds, was securely locked. Acting on the warrant in their possession the police forced the doors and found evidence of illicit distillation in the dwelling house as well as in the sheds.
After taking stock of the position tho senior sergeant and Sergeant Abel returned to Invorcargill by car, leaving the two constables in charge of the premises. At about 7 p.m. tho occupier, Burke, arrived and was arrested by tho constables. lie was taken to the Invorcargill iock-up and appeared'in the Police Court this afternoon.
