AFFAIRS OF DIOCESE.

ARTICLE IN NEWSPAPER.

CENSURE MOTION LAPSES. [BY TELEGRAPH.—-OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HAMILTON. Friday. Reference to the censure motion debated at the Waikato Diocesan Synod yesterday, concerning the action of Canon J. L. A. Kayll in writing an article in a newspaper dealing with affairs of the diocese, was made in synod this evening, when Mr. Jv B. Hine (Stratford) asked permission to place before synod a message he had received from His follow synodsman, Mr. E. H. Young (Stratford), who had to return home early. Consent being given, Mr. Iline read the following telegram:—"Tell synod people here are indignant at Canon Ivayll's unjustified attack in synod. Parishioners challenge him to substantiate his statements."

Canon Kayll said he thought if synodsnien were going to treat a member of synod in the way suggested he was sorry for them,

Mr. Hine pointed out that the matter could not bo discussed.

Canon Kayll considered that Mr. Hine should have shown the message to the president of the house. Mr. Hine said he had dono so, and Bishop Cherrington t.greed that the matter had been mentioned to him.

Canon Kayll expressed surprise that a gallant soldier like Mr. Hine should not have given a man a fair trial before he was shot down. The speaker explained that ho had been told that the parishioners of Stratford had been advised not to subscribe to the diocesan funds until the bishop was removed. He did not attack

the parishioners. Canon Kayll said it would be absolutely disgusting if the message got any support from synod. If it did it would bo the last ho would have to do with synod and he thought he might have been given bettor treatment in view of the service ho had rendered.

Tho bishop explained that ho had not grasped what Mr. Iline had said to him and ho apologised to Canon Ivayll for not vetoing the reception of the message. Canon Kayll apologised to the bishop for' placing him in that position. The censure motion moved yesterday was allowed to lapse.
