TESTS PROVE VERY SUCCESSFUL

Direct radio communication between Dunedin and New York has been cstab lishod by Mr Borknor, of the Bureau of Standards. Washington. The s'ation hero has been coupled with tho ship Eloanor Boiling at Port Chalmers by a control line, making it possiblo to keep m constant touch with New York and tho Byrd expedition in Antarctica, and to relay mes sages from tho baso to New York. The control station was put into opera tion yesterday for tho first time, and tho tests proved satisfactory, perfect communi cation with Now York and Antarctica being established. This was tho first time such a system had been worked in New Zealand. Messages wero sent and received at the rato of 35 words a minuto.

Mr. Borknor is also carrying out research in Dunedin, and is making records of the fading of English, American and Dutch short-wavo stations, for tho purposo of obtaining more scientific information regarding the propagation of wireless waves. Tho geographic position of Now Zoaland in respect to the powerful short wave broadcasting stations in other parts of tho world makes it possible for excel lent work to be carriod out in this direction Special equipment for observation purposes has been designed for tho Dunedin station, and the results so far indi cate that tho final records made will be of great importance to the futuro of radio.
