IMPROVEMENT IN MAY.
SMALL V GAIN FOR EIGHT WEEKS

A working profit of £121,746 is shown by the Railway Department's account for the six weeks ended May 25. For the corresponding period last year the net revenue was £95,260.
The gross earnings wero £668,915, and the expenses £547,169. The former shows an increase of £32,435 and the latter an increase of £3549.
The working profit in the North Island was £55,632, as compared with £44,918 in the corresponding period of last year; that from the South Island railways £49,667, as against £32,398, while net miscellaneous revenue. declined by £1497 to £16,447, " For the period of 56 days from April 1 to'- May 25, working profits totalled. £225,481, an increase of £3629 over the total for 55. day's h>st year. They comprised. £100,886 from tho North - Island railways (a decline, of £15,292); £91,652 from the South Island railways (an increase of £24,482); and £36,573 from miscellaneous services (a decline of £5561).
