ROTORUA V. TAUPO.

Sir, —In his letter of a recent is:;ue s "Live and Let Live" appears to be rais* ing grpundless fears regarding Taupo's tourist traffic, owing to the stopping of the railway to that • place. In fact, ha , seems to think that Taupo is being altogether badly 'done by; It seems he meat have misinterpreted Sir Joseph Ward's speech at Rotorua, if he thinks anything savouring of Rotorua v. Taupo was mentioned. Sir Joseph certainly did state his proposals for the improvements and additions to the bath buildings at Rotorua, as well as the repair and surfacing of certain roads, n<?'.ably the Wairoa and Waimungu loop roads. When one considers the amount of revenue the Government has derived from this road (per medium of the round trip), and also the wretched condition it is in, and has been in for years, surely its repair is justified. Also, if "Live and Let Live" considered the many years which have elapsed since Rotorua has had a penny spent either on its bath buildings or main tourist roads, he would not think Sir Joseph was showing "extreme favour" for bringing it "more up-to-date. While not intending to depreciate Taupo in any way whatsoever, I think it will be amply provided for, both for tourist and settler alike, in tha construction of a good bitumen highway, which, as Sir Joseph said, the Government would undertake. Rational.
