MINERS SEEK WORK.
SCHEME NEAR TANGOWAHINE NO CONCESSION BY COUNCIL. [BIT telegram.—own correspondent.] DARGAVILLE. Thursday. A deputation representing the Hikurangi coalminers waited on the County Council yesterday and asked what royalty would be charged on coal carted over county roads from the Avoca coal mines, which they have proposed opening. "There are over 200 out of work over there," said the spokesman of the deputation. "I hope the council will make the proposition favourable. We hope to find work for ourselves. The coal will be carted eleven miles to Dargaville, via Tangowahine." Tho deputation said that, pending their being able to load the coal in trucks at Tangowahine station, three miles from the mine, the miners must use the road or a barge. The council decided that the royalty of 6d per ton per mile, provided in the bylaws, should stand. "The council must think first of the ratepayers who rated themselves to provide loans to build the existing roads," said the chairman, Mr. V Trounson.
