NIGHT PROCESSIONS.

BANNED IN SYDNEY. RESULT OF POLICE REPORT. The New South Wales Government has decided that in future night processions through the Sydney streets are to be absolutely banned. This decision has been taken in consequence of the experience of the recent May Day procession, which seriously interfered with the traffic, and necessitated calling into the citv many of the suburban police. Daylight processions will only be permitted when th.e consent of the Commissioner ot Police is obtained in writing. Applications for a procession will in future have to bo made to the police, and they will be considered on their merits. The Chief Secretary, Mr. Chaffey, stated recently that the Commissioner of Police had reported to him that he and his responsible officers were concerned with the tendency that had developed of late to held "processions at night time. Mr. Childs also advised that processions held in the city undoubtedly seriously interfered with the traffic arrangements in the congested thoroughfares. The withdrawal of the police from suburbs meant that those localities were denuded of the necessary number of police required for the prevention of crime and tlie protection of life and property.
