NEW STEAMER SERVICE.
CANADA AND AUSTRALIA. TENDERS CLOSE NEXT MONTH. Australian Press Association—United Service OTTAWA. May 17. The Department of Trade and Com-, merce has decided 'to call for lenders, returnable on June 19, for a direct steamship service between British Columbia and Australia. • The service will be a monthly one each way and will be limited to cargo vessels of about 8000 tons. The steamers will sail from British Columbian ports wherever cargo in sufficient quantities is being offered. The sailings will start as soon as possible after the contract has been let, possibly in August. No Government subsidy has been appropriated for the service yet, but it is understood one will be provided for when the supplementary Estimates are brought down. The. amount of subsidy, required is expected to be stated by the tenderers. The freight rates are to be subject to the approval of the Minister of Trade and Commerce. Shipping men may tender for' contracts fov one, three or five years' duration. /The ships must have a speed of It) knots and a capacity for a minimum of 4,000,000 ft. of timber, in addition to general cargo.
