LEVEL CROSSING DANGER.

MOUNT ALBERT STREETS. GATES OR BOOMS REQUESTED. The necessity for having adequate safeguard at the Argyle and Georgo Street level crossings, Mount Albert, was stressed at a meeting of tho Mount Albert Borough Council last evening, when it was decided to request the Railway Department to place gates or booms at both these places.

Replying to a former letter from the council, the Minister of Railways advised that it was considered the warnings at Argyle Street and Gladstone Road crossings gave adequate protection. However, as an audible warning was desired by residents near tho Argyle Street crossing, a " Pearson " type of warning, similar to the " wig-wag " signal, might be installed there in place of tho flashing sign. The Minister also notified that experiments were being carried out with gates or booms, and a trial was to bo made with these.

Mr. 11. L. Kayes said the present signal at Argyle Street did not give sufficient warning, while it was always liable not to function. Ho did not favour the "Pearson" signal, which also might not work. On his motion, it was decided to ask for a boom at the Argyle Street crossing. ~,1.1 In a further letter, the department advised that it was not prepared to blast away a rock cliff which obstructed the view at the George Street crossing, but the council might do this at its own expense. It was decided to send a strong letter of protest to the department; and to request that a boom should bo provided at this crossing also.
