NO CREW FOR SHIP.
DISPUTE OVER SELECTION.
COMPANY AND THE UNION.
STEAMER DELAYED IN PORT*
The Union Steam Ship Company's steamer Kaiapoi, which was laid up last Friday owing to trouble with the crew, was to have been recommissioned yesterday and despatched to Westport and Greymouth. The vessel did not sail, however, as the company was unable to obtain a suitable crew and the signing-on of the men was postponed.
The Kaiapoi was held up last Friday because when she was to have sailed the previous evening the stokers would not remain on board in sufficient numbers to allow the vessel to go to sea. Next morning one of the stokers was missing and a substitute supplied by the Seamen's Union was objected to .by the chief engineer. The crew then refused to take the vessel to sea unless the man was signed on. The company, however, refused to comply with the crew's demands and all the stokers and seamon were discharged. The trouble yesterday was a repetition of last Friday's dispute, which was whether a crew was to bo chosen by the Union Company or the Seamen's Union.
