OBITUARY.
MR. W. C. EDWARDS. The death occurred in Sydney on April 25, after a 1 short illness, of Mr. Walter Cleeve Edwards, only son of the late Archdeacon and Mrs. Edwards. As a pioneer civil engineer in New Zealand, Mr, Edwards played his part in early developmental works in the South Island. After successful work in New Zealand lie went to South Africa l , where ho served for 16 years and received the appointment of second engineer to tho Capo Colony. During tho Boor War Mr. Edwards was at Vryborg, and there ho was captured by tho' Boers and made a prisoner for the rest of tho war. At the end of tho war all tho British engineers in South Africa received pensions and Mr. Edwards left for tho Gilbert and Ellico Islands, where lie was appointed chief resident and engineer to tho company working tho phosphate deposits. Ho retired a few years ago and resided in Sydney until the time of his death.
MR. ANDERS NIELSEN. [by telegraph,-—own correspondent.] FALMERSTON NORTH, Tuesday. Ono of tho pioneers of tl.o district, Mr. Anders Nielsen, died this morning at tho ago of 81 years. He had been ill for only a few days. Mr. Nielsen arrived in New Zealand in 1891 and took up farm land in the Fitzherbert district,, and later at To Matai. Ho retired about eight years a£o and camo to reside at Palm6rslon North. 110 had since lived in Linton Street. He retained all his faculties to tho end. Mr. Nielsen was always an ardent worker in the interests of the Danish Lutheran Church of Palmerston North, and throughout nil the Lutheran districts. 110 is survived bv his wife, one son and two daughters. There are 18 grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren.
