Miss Phyllis Gnbbin, the contralto vocalist, is spending the term vacation with her parents at Waipa, Calliope Road, Devonport, and will return to Kaitaia on Saturday week.

The Takapuna branch of the League of Mothers held its monthly meeting in the parish hall yesterday afternoon. Mrs. J. Bartrum presided and introduced Miss Greville, who addressed those present upon the benefits of open air schools. Afternoon tea was served by Mrs. Douglas, Mrs. Ewing and Mrs. C'onlthard, this concluding a pleasant afternoon.

Mr. Philip Suowden, M.P., in the course of a recent speech, referred to the revolution in recent years in regard to women's dress. Miss Mary Patterson has been awarded the special travelling scholarship founded in the University of Melbourne by the Returned Sailors and Soldiers' Imperial League (Victorian branch) for the benefit of a University graduate whose father gave his life in the Great War. Miss Patterson, who is the daughter of the late Colonel W. G. Patterson, is a graduate of Melbourne University.. She will leave for England in July to do a two venrs' post-graduate course in bio-chemis-try.

A popular matron of Tresillian, the mothercraft training home of tlie Royal Society for tho Welfare of Mothers and Babies in Sydney, is Miss Sheila Carinicl'.ael, who has recently resigned her position. Miss Carmichael, says a Sydney paper, has endeared herself very much to patients, trainees and members of the committee, and great regret is felt at her severing her connection with the home, where she has occupied tlie position of matron for five and a-hnlf years.

Members of the Athenian Club spent a very enjoyable evening on Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. J. F. O'Connor were host and hostess and had arranged an excellent programme for the evening's entertainment. The stage was decorated in multicoloured streamers, and softly-coloured lights threw a losy glow over the dance floor. Favours of paper caps were distributed and other novelties added to the gaiety of the evening. The following contributed items: —Mrs. P. Franchi, Miss Linda Murphy, Miss M. Burns, Mr. li. At the annual meeting of the Papanui branch of the Mothers' Union appreciative reference was made of the invaluable services rendered to the branch by Mrs. Corby, who for the past 25 years has been a tower of strength to the executive of tho union. Mrs. W. 11. Or bell, wife of tho vicar of St. Paul's, in presenting Mrs. Corby with a handsome crystal bowl to mark the completion of a quarter of a century's devoted work, said that the recipient had been for 21 years honorary secretary of the Papanui branch, and for four years honorary treasurer. This, Mrs. Orb'ell thought, constituted a record for tho Dominion.
