THEFT FROM COMPANION.
MAORI SENT TO PRISON

A middle-aged native, Onopu Daniels, was charged in the Whangarei Magistrate's Court to-day with the theft of £27 from Robert Maunsell. . Constable Holt said he arrested accused at Hikurangi, and accused admitted that he had stolen £25. When arrested he had £24 in his possession. Accused had gone to a boarding liouso with Maunsell, who was drunk, and accused,, although sober, had deliberately stolen the money from his companion.
Accused pleaded guilty, and elected to be dealt with summarily.
Tho magistrate, Mr.' J. 11. Luxford, characterised the theft as a particularly mean one, and as a class of crime which must lis suppressed. Accused was sentenced to three months' imprisonment.
