COMPARISON OF RETURNS. Following is a summary of transactions on New Zealand Stock Exchanges since Friday of last week. In the second column is given the return, based on the last dividend, from investment Qt the quoted price. In the case of Government and other redeemable securities the return includes redemption. INTERIM DIVIDEND DECLARED

The Now Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited,' has received cabled advice from its head office in London that interim dividends have been declared at the rate of 2£ per cent, on the 5 per cent, cumulative preference stock, 34 per cent, on the 6 { s per cent, cumulative second preference stock and 3 per cent, on the ordinary stock. All are less English income tax. The dividends are payable on Juno 29. CHICAGO WHEAT MARKET. LOWEST PRICES SINCE 1914. Australian and N.Z. Press Association. CHICAGO, May 9. Wheat. —May, 1 dollar 3 5-8 cents per bushel; July, 1 dollar 7 7-8 cents; September 1 dollar 11£ cents; December, 1 dollar 15 1-8 cents. These prices represent the lowest level that has been reached at this season of the year since 1914.

AMERICAN WINTER WHEAT. DEPARTMENTAL ESTIMATES. Australian Press Association—United Service WASHINGTON, May 9. Tlio Department of Agriculture announced to-day that tho yield of winter Wheat as indicated by the conditions on May 1 would be 595,335,000 bushels or 83.6 J>er cent, of tho normal, compared with 82.7 per cent, on April 1 and 74.9 per cent, on May 1, 1928. The area of winter wheat to harvesters is estimated at 40,467,000 acres at May 1. Last year's crop totalled 578,964,000 bushels and that of 1927 was 552,747,000 bushels.

SUPERANNUATION SCHEME. NATIONAL PROVIDENT FUND. Provision for employees on retirement is a world-wide problem. In New Zealand the State, through the National Provident Fund Act as recently amended, now provides a schemo of superannuation. Employers may include the whole or any number of their, employees in a State contributory pension scheme under conditions which it is claimed should meet tho requirements of tho general body of employers and employees.
