THE WATERFRONT ROAD.

BITUMEN SURFACING.

CITY MAY DO THE WORK

If a proposal placed before tho Auckland City Council last evening is adopted, tho surfacing of tho Waterfront Road from Campbell's Point to Mission Bay will be carried out by the council, the Public Works Department paying the cost.

The acting-city engineer, Mr. J. Tyler, reported that lie had fully discussed the matter with the engineer in charge of the road construction work. The surface was to be laid down hv the bitumen penetration process, and tho department was willing to pay 3s Cd a square yard, his estimate ot the cost of the work. He would recommend that the arrangement should bo approved, because it was distinctly in the council's interests. Crushed metal from the council's quarry would bo used, the staff would be kept more fully employed, and ho would be able to find more advantageous use than otherwise for the council's plant and men, who were specially skilled in such work. The matter was referred to tho works committee for a report.
