COMMANDER BYRD'S DOGS.

HUSKIES ON QUAIL ISLAND

QUESTION OF TREATMENT

At a meeting of the Christchurch branch of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelly to Animals the matter of Commander Byrd's dogs, which at present are in quarantine upon Quail Island, in Lyltelton Harbour, was raised. Mrs. G. Connal opened the discussion. "I don't know if it has anything to do with us," she said, "but there have been several letters in the press lately regarding the huskies now on Quail Island. It is said that they must be starved to be held in check. Purely this is not right." Mr. Northcote: Surely that is impossible. At any rate the Government inspector would not allow it. Mr. Jameson: There is a man from tho United States with them and we can be sure he will look after them all right. It was suggested that the chairman and one or two members of the committee should visit Quail Island to see exactly under what conditions the animals live.
