FEAT OF AN AMERICAN
NEARLY EIGHT MILES UP
(Received May 9, 11.25 p.m.) United Service. WASHINGTON, May 8. An American naval airman, Lieutenant Apollo Soucek, ascended nearly eight miles in an aeroplane to-day and established a world's altitude record. He used an oxygen mask and a super-charger after he touched 20,000 ft. The airman's instruments showed that he had risen more than 40,000 ft.
