TOTAL OF SHIPS' TONNAGE.
BRITAIN FAR IN LEAD
Australian Press Association—United Service (Received May 10, 12.25 a.m.) LONDON, May 9. The annual return of the Suez Canal Company for 1928 shows that transit receipts were 222,396,208 francs. The total tonnage that passed through the canal was 51,905,902, of which that of British ships was 18,124,074 tons; Dutch, 0,329,628 tons; German, 3,300,013 tons; Trench, 1,926,969 tons; and Italian, 1,649,792 tons. The chief users were the Peninsula and Oriental and allied lines, with a tonnage of 3,213,000, the British Tanker Company, 2,583,000, and the Ellerman group, 1,966,000.
