SOUTH AFRICAN TOUR, MATCH AT SURREY OVAL. j _• Australian Press Association—United Service LONDON, May 8. In the cricket match, Surrey v. South Africans, at the Oval, the local eleven in their first innings scored 229 (Fender 79). Vincent took six wickets for 62 runs. The South Africans had made 106 for eight wickets (Catterall 41) when stumps were drawp. The members of the South African cricket team now in England are: H. G. Deane (Transvaal), captain; H. W. Taylor (Natal), R. H. Catterall (Orange Free State), A. J. Bell (Western Province), H. B, Cameron (Transvaal), J. A. J. Christy (Transvaal), E. L. Dalton (Natal), Q. MacMillan (Transvaal), B. Mitchell (Transvaal), D. P. B. Morkel (Western Province), A. L. Ochse (Eastern Province), H. G. Owen-Smith (Western Province), N. A. Quinn (Griqualand), I. J. Siedle (Natal), E. A. Van der Merwe (Transvaal), and C. L. Vintcent (Transvaal). Only three of the men—Deane, the captain, Taylor, and Catterall—have been in England before, and nine of the 16 players are under 24 years of age. The committee of selection had its eyes on the future, and remembering how successful a similar policy has turned out in Australia, South African cricket may well be on the eve of a genuine revival. Perhaps, unfortunately for the visitors, they will meet in the test matches a ready-made English eleven confident in its strength and steeled in the fiery furnace of the Australian atmosphere. The team is accompanied by Mr. H. 0. Frielinghous, a honorary manager, and Mr. Frames, secretary of the South African Board of Control, both of whom have done much for cricket in South Africa, and who have the best interests of cricket at heart. The South Africans have always been popular in England. They began their tour at Worcester on Wednesday, May 1, and on the previous Monday, April 29, they played a one-day match on Bearsted Green—an historic spot which, can boast a long cricket history. ATJSTKALIAN HOCKEY TEAM. VISIT TO NEW ZEALAND. Australian and N.Z. Press Association. SYDNEY, May 9. The New South Wales Hockey Association has been notified that an Australian team will tour New Zealand and possibly Fiji. A team of 16 players will leave early in July.
