Doctor Mary Essinberg, a graduate of the California University, when on a visit to the East, was asked by Syrian and Arabian chieftains to found a mission school for their daughters. She commenced operations in a tent, and so popular has the venture proved that there is now an enrolment of 80 pupils.

On Thursday afternoon tbo girls' branch of the Victoria League arranged a bridge, party at the Evelyn Firth Home , for returned soldiers. A very enjoyable, afternoon was spent, prizes being won by Mr'. Skilley and Mr. Beaumont. These parties will bo' continued each month throughout the year. A meeting of the Civic. League was held in the Y.W.C.A. Hall on Wednesday evening, the president, Mrs. Kenneth Gordon, presiding over a large attendance of members. It was decided to make a complaint to the medical oflicer of health about unhygienic practices in wrapping up food parcels. The suggestion was put forward" to ask that a verandah be erected over the entrance of the post office. It was suggested that fresh food left over from sea voyages be handed over to city missions and similar organisations. An appeal is to be made to the police authorities asking that certain city streets be better policed.

Mrs. S. Prime, senior, entertained the president and members of the Devonport Crouquefc Club at a luncheon party on Wednesday to mark the closing week of the club until tho reopening ne.\t season. An honorary -member. Miss Newbegin, gave six prizes for the croquet, match played during, the afternoon. These-were won by the following ladies:—lst A grade, Mrs. Palairet; 2nd A grade. Miss G. Duder; Ist B grade, Mrs. Lidford; 2nd B grade, Mrs. Foster. Consolation prizes went, to Mrs. Flvnn and Mrs. U. Duder. The president, Mrs. J. Newell, thanked Mrs. Prime and Mrs. Newbecin on hehalf of the members of the club for the very pleasant day they had spen!.
