MOUNT ROSKILL BOARD.

DRAINAGE PROBLEMS. REPORT FROM OFFICIALS. The Mount Roskill .Road Board met last evening, the chairman, Mr. E. I'. Jones, presiding. A joint report from Mr. L. B. Campbell, district engineer of Public Works, and Dr. T. J. Hughes-, medical officer of health, deprecated the formation of a separate drainage board for the Manukau. The report stated it was more economical to extend the opeiations of the Auckland and Suburban Board, with a view to draining each parit of the metropolitan area into the harbour which was the more convenient. The proposed extension would then incorporate the Onehuriga and Otahuhu boroughs, Ellerslie town district, One Tree Hill, Mount. Roskill and MountWellington road districts, part of Manukau County, New Lynn, Henderson, Glen Eden and the southern portion of Waitemata County, but not tho North Shore boroughs, which would require a separate board, having drainage problems of a different character.

On this account the report favoured the visit to Europe arid America of Mr. If. H. Watkins, engineer to the Auckland and Suburban Drainage Board, to study modern drainage systems and urged that this would bring better results than engaging no overseas engineer. Mr. Watkins further advised that as he was leaving Auckland very shortly on a t'jmr ot investigation of sewer systems, he could not at. present proceed with the report on Ihe proposed extension of_ the drainage district, so as to includo tho Manukau watershed of Eden County. However, ho could fully investigate the question on his return, if desired by the local authorities concerned.

The Road Board's engineer Mr. J. D. YVhitmore, reported that Mr Watkins had written approving his plans for the reticulation sewer system for the Three Kings area of the Mount Roskill road district. and had asked when it was desired that this area shotild be included in the drainage district. Nine building permits, including three for dwellings, were issued during the past fortnight.
