THE GREAT NORTHERNS.

REVIEW OF THE WEIGHTS. BY ARCHER. The declaration of the weights for the Great Northern Hurdies and the GreatNorthern Steeplechase has caused a quicken ing of interest in those events, which are among the most popular of the many lm portant races on the season's calendar. The meeting is yet about five weeks off and in that time many horses may come into Bnd go out or favour. THE HURDLE RACE. As winner of many good races and last year's Grand National Hurdle Race with 11.11, Nukumai has earned his position as top-weight in the Great Northern Hurdles with 12.0. Hordes be beat at Riccarton have all received an allowance and he now meets Gaze (second) 41b., Red Fuchsia (third) 91b.. Beau Cavalier 121b., Pouri 21b., End Kilhurn 61b. worse. Last year'-a winner of the Great Northern Hurdle Race, Beau Cavalier, is up 231b. and the rise is substantial, although it only represents an increase of 91 b. over the weight he carried to victory >n the Winter Hurdles it Trentham. Therefore he is not unduly burdened. Other runners in the event last year come' in as follows:—Wedding March, 3lb. less: Pouri, lib more; Maunga (third), 21b. less; Mister Gamp, 3lb. more; end Karamu, lib. less. Faulty jumping cost Mister Gamp an excellent chance tast year, and, if well schooled, he should be Tery dangerous this time. Elicit has earned his 10,12 by reason of his good form this season. He is an improver and therefore likely to prove troublesome, Wiltshire aud Kawini arc nicely placed. Comical ha 3 come down as a result of his failures, but may be getting too old to come back to his best. There are many possibilities among the others, including Glengariff, Mangani, Clockwork, Kapuna, Cybele, Komak aud Kilburn. Those who make early selections may take their fancies from Wiltshire, Mister Gamp. Gaze, Wedding March, Kawini and Red Fuchsia. THE STEEPLECHASE. Crack steeplechaser Beau Cavalier, who ■won the three most important steeplechases in the Dominion two year 3 ago, heads the list in the Great Northern Steeplechase ■with 11.10 and at that he has Gib, less than last year, when Glendowie won with 9.7. Subsequently Glendowie won the Winter Steeplechase with 10.7, and he is therefore not badly treated at IX4. Eawini and Weddi.'ig March, who filled the places behind Glendowie in the Winter Steeplechase last year, are now set to meet him on 2lb. and Sib. better terms respectively Kawini has been a winner over hurdles and country is the meantime and so could scarcely have received any further allowance. As winner of the Grand National Steeplechase with 10.01, Wiltshire, who ran third in the Great Northern Steeplechase last year under 9.13, is nicely placed #t 10.7 and should be a dangerous horse. Nukumai, Red Fuchsia and Elicit have ell been weighted a little lighter than in the hurdle 3 and this is reasonable, because they have yet to prove themselves over country. Pouri, with 10.0, meets Wiltshire on 161b. better terms than when beaten by that horse at Riccartou. On that occasion Wiltshire had a margin of 10 lengths, and, ■whereas he has won lately, Pouri ha 3 not performed well in his, last couple of starts. Mangani recently won the Autumn Steeple chase under 9.12 aud at 10.2 new meets Potoanui (second) 9lb. worse, Kawini (third) 71b. worse, and Beau Cavalier 71b. worse. Maunga (9.11) has 31b. less than iast year, while Brigadier Bill has come down 81b.

Tho light-weights include a number of possibilities, and such as Zircon, Kapuna, Mountain Crag, Kilburn and Matu may prove worthy candidates. Clockwork, although he failed iu the Autumn Steeple chase, may also be a likely one. It is:, also probable thi.t some of the younger brigade may improve sufficiently to have chances, but at tliis stage horses whose chances may appeal are Glendowie, Wiltshire, Kawini, Wedding March. I'ouri. Maunga and Zircon.

glendowie out of hurdles. Glendowie was withdrawn from the Great Northern Hurdle Race at 10 a.m. J esterday.

Comical's weight in the Great Northern Hurdle Race is 10.11, not 10.12, as published yesterday. General entries for minor events in connection -with tho Auckland Racing Club's Winter Meeting close to-morrow at 5 p.m. MISCELLANEOUS .NOTES. A full-brother to Goshawk was sold for SOOgns at the recent Sydney yearling talcs. H. Wiggins, the Auckland light-weiglit horseman, has riding engagements io fulfil at the Marton meeting on Saturday. The veteran hurdler Nukumai is due to make an appearance at Marton on Saturday. He last faced the starter at Levin in November. Sleepy Sol was schooled at Ellen-lie the ether morning and gave a good display. Ho is only beginning his education as a jumper and he shows considerable aptitude. Tinokoa usually displays his best form Then the tracks uro heavy. He looked brighter than for boibq time at To Rnpa owl may win a , stake or two during the winter. Paitonu was a liHle unlucky when he finished fourth in the Te Rapa Handicap. He performed well when (he tracks were soft last winter and probably In; will do likewise this year.

H. Dtilum. tho Auckland cross-country jockey, is coins to the Marton meeting to ride £>tar of the Kast in tho steeplechase. He will probably go to Hawera and Wangajiui, where he will ride Gala Day in his engagements.

After running without much luck in 'several previous starts, Indolent was rewarded with a win in the lluntly Hack Handicap at Te Rapa. Hu ia a solid customer, being a strong finisher, and lie is likely to go on improving.

Some riding enggements for the Marton meeting on Saturday are as follows:—L. 0. Morris, Kuanui and Vast Acre; B It. Slorris, Royal Damon; J. J. Alley Warfill?, Hatteras; R. Anderson. Atacama. L. Jarvis, Killbrook, Banjuke; F Corlett, Brigadier Bill: H. Dulien, Star of the East.

After an absence of two years from the lace track. Paddon made a successful re appearance in the Puketaha High-weight Handicap at Te Rapa. His win came as a big surprise. Paddon is a good horue m T>ad ground and ho is likely to win something better during the winter.

Glendowio has been, out doing a little hunting and is expected to be well forward by the time the Auckland Winter Meeting Arrives. It will be remembered ■wort three races last June —the Hunters' Hurdles, Great Northern Steeplechase and Winter Steeplecliasc. He is likely to do treli again this year.

Valuation*!! two defeats at Te Rapa were costly to hia backers. The Valkyrian gelding did not run up tq the form be displayed at Trenthani, where he won with the greatest of ease among the hack sprinters. He haa been nominated for Hawera and Wanganui and he may make amends at ono of thesie places.

For some monthn Prince Lu has been racing on the flat and has performed quite creditably at the country meetings. Ho shaped particularly wull in his first start over hurdlesi last year, and only for meet ing with a raishap might have been successful. It is unticipiit-sd he will return to hurdling shortly and may be worth keeping in mind for the approaching winter meetings.
