TROUBLE OVER GRANT.
DARGAVILLE SCHOOL FUND. COMMITTEE ADMITS MISTAKE. A mistake in applying for a grant of £lO as a subsidy on a donation of £lO was acknowledged in a letter received by the Auckland Education Board yesterday from the newly-elected Dargaville school committee.
The letter, which asked for the return 0} thy committee's books and the High School improvement fund passbook, stated : ' Investigation into the donation of £lO from Mr. Colmoro Williams, on which tho late committee obtained a subsidy of £lO, shows that the secretary made a mistake in stating that this amount had been donated by Mr. Williams in March, 1928. It represents part of a larger sum ot money collected from Dargaville citizens, and held in trust for High School improvement in 1922. On the list sent to the board then you will find tho £lO donation from Mr. Williams." Iho letter concluded with an expression of regret at the mistake. " Voluntary subscriptions are eligible for voluntary subsidies only if they are applied for within 12 months," said the chairman, Mr. A. Burns. "'the question to decide is whether wo will call on (he committee for a refund of the £lO- - whether we will validato the grant." Mr. H. Hoe said that provided the board was satisfied the money-had been paid in, and that no subsidy had already been paid on it, he could sec no objection (o making tho grant. " The monev is not. ours, it belongs to the department," replied tho (hairman. " Are you going to validato the pavment V' it was decided to investigate the position further.
