BUTTER-FAT PAYMENTS.
Sir, —On April 29 you published under the title-of " A Eeply to Critics " a summary of a letter circulated by the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company, Limited. An effort is made to ridicule an assertion of the Shareholders' Association that tho suppliers should hate received an additional 2d per lb. butterfat., and Mr. Parlane says any such statement is inaccurate and misleading. Let ma remind him it is the statement 'of no less .an authority than Mr. Goodfellow, who, in the Dairyfarmer of July 20, 1922, says:—"Tho saving in manufacture, plus selling premium, equals ljd per lb. . . - it may be fairly assumed that 2d per. lb. butter-fat less will be finally paid out by the small co-operative butter factories." As an association, wo have pointed out that savings which the management claim as a result of large-scale operations do not accrue to the suppliers; that Mr. Goodfellow's promised 2d per lb. has not gone to the farmers, but, on the other hand, the cost of manufacture in the' New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company's factories is 30s per ton higher than in "other co-operative factories of the Auckland Province. We merely ask why this should be so. J. G. ;Wynxard.
Sir—ln reply to Mr. Wynyard in your issue of April *23, I am pleased to knowhe is not complaining of tho selling price of the butter, but I would point out, that this makes his other statements harder to understand. If my memory serves me rightly, tho total cost of manufacturing and marketing is less than 2ju per lb. Yet his association states we should have received 2d per lb. more than we have received. The marketing and freight charges aione account for at least M per lb., so that I fail to see that the mere fact of having our own coalmine and box factory would enable the management to manufacture the butter free of charge, and pay a substantial bonus for the privilege of being able to do so. ,b b G.
