SCREENING THE RETURNS. LARGE CROWD GATHERS. The screening of the results of the municipal elections on the side of the Herald building was watched with close interest by a large crowd which gathered on the slopes of Wyndham Street. As the evening progressed and suburban results camo to hand the throng increased, and by Ihe time that the final return was posted there were nearly 2000 persons outside the building. Thero was little of the enthusiasm which usually marks Parliamentary elections, but nevertheless the fortunes of the candidates were followed with a close interest, particularly in the contest for the city Mayoralty. From the first return Mr. Baildon was in the lead, with Mr. Bloodworth and Mr. Vaile running even in second position. The relative positions remained almost unchanged as iater returns were given, but most of the crowd remained to the end, when the final was acclaijned by a burst of clapping, which was renewed with far greater warmth when the Mayor came out to speak.
