CITY COUNCIL SEATS.
EIGHT NEW MEMBERS. MR. HUTCHISON LEADS. FIVE COUNCILLORS REJECTED. RE-ELECTION OF TWO WOMEN. The defeat of five of the 18 old members who sought re-election was the feature of the Auckland City Council poll. To a newcomer in Mr. G. W. Hutchison fell the honour of heading the poll, and Mr. T. Bloodwortlii was a good second.
New mlimbers of the council are:— Messrs. G. W. Hutchison, F. N. Bartram, G. Grey Campbell, B. L. Bagnall, J. E. Lundon, I>. M. Irvine, G. L. Brownlee and H. P. Burton.
Retiring members who unsuccessfully sought re-election were Messrs. J. A. C. Allum", S. 1. Crookes, O. McBrine, J. W. Carr, and J. W. Kealy. The two last-named joined the old council during its term, Mr. Carr being one of two Taniaki representatives and Mr. Kealy one of three from Avondale. Labour will have three representatives in the new council, Mr. Bartram joining Messrs. Bloodworth and Phelan. There were also three Labour representatives in the old council, but Mr. G. Davis did not seek re-election
Although Miss Basten and Miss Melville were re-elected, none of the other two women aspirants was successful.
Keen interest was manifested in the voting, particularly among the record number of candidates, 67 in all, for whose convenience special accommodation was set apart. Good headway was made with the Jiuge task of counting the votes, once the Mayoralty polling had been completed.
The provisional count was completed at 1.45 this morning. An official count will later take place, and it. is possible that, as at the previous election, there may be some alteration in the final placing of candidates on the borderline between victory and defeat. Following are details of the voting: Successful.
