APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED. LORD GOSCHEN'S SUCCESSOR. British Wireless. RUGBY, April 29. The King has approved of the appointment ot Lieutenant-Colonel George Stanley to be Governor of the Presidency ,of Madras, in succession to Viscount Goschen, whose term of office will expire in the autumn. .

Lieutenant-Colonel George Frederick Stanley is a son ot the late Earl of Derby, and brother of the present peer. He is Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Pensions, and sits in the House of Commons for Willesden East. Ho was born in 1872, and was at Wellington College and Woolwich Academy. He entered the Horse Artillery in 1893, and saw service in South Africa and in the late war He was Controller of the Household, 1919-21; Financial Secretary to the Wai Office, 1921-22, and UnderSecretary for Home Affairs, 1922-23. He was for 13 years member for Preston. He had a majority of 7953 afc the general election over his Liberal opponent. Viscount Gosche-i has been Governor oE Madras since 1924. He succeeded to the titl.- in 1907. From 1895 to 1906 he was Conservative member of the House of Commons He was from 1890 to 1892 private secretary to the Governor of New South Wales, the Earl of Jersey. _ When the Viceroy of India, Lord Irwin, goes home for a time in June, Viscount Goschen will be Acting-Viceroy.
