BOXING.
TE AWAMUTU TOURNEY. [r.y TEI.EGR YPH.—OWN COR RESPONDENT.] TE AWAMUTU, Tuesday. The To Awamutu Young Men's Institute held its fust boxing tournament of the 1929 winter season last evening in the Empire Theatre. The chief item of a good programme was a contest for the Muir Challenge Cup, between Clnrrie Craig (Y.M.1.), 9.10, and F. Fraei (Auckland), 9.12, six twominute rounds. The Aucklander gave Ciaig who is an unusually clever boxer, a gruelling contest, but Craig won the trop'hy. Fraei did most of the leading in. the opening round, but Craig steadied him with right and left to the face. There was plenty of fighting in the succeeding rounds, particularly in the fifth, where Fraei> connected to the jaw with a hard left. In the final round Craig stopped Fraei with a smash to the face, but he could not finalise matters. The rest of the round was even,- and the referee, Mr. G. Venn (Taumarunui), decided in favour of Craig. Other bouts were:—E. Horan (x.M.1.). S.O, lost to P. Bowler (Frankton), 8.0; Fraei (Auckland), 9.2, beat Mutton . (Frankton). 9.5: W. Lift (Taupiri), 12.5. beat E. Holmes (Y.M.1.), 12.1; J. Roper (Taumarunui), 9.8, lost fo Allan Craig (Y.M.1.), 9.8; W. Sims (Pirongia), 0.1, defeated F. Leskey (Y.M.1.), 9.1: A. Carr (Frankton), 8.6, lost to J. Williams (Hamilton), 8.(5; Pratt (Frankton), beat P. Harford (Y Ml). An exhibition three rounds by .Took Wilson (Frankton). 9.6, and K. Bennett (Y.M.1.). 10.0, provided a spirited sparring match.
