Red Fuchsia, Nucleus and Ki'burn, three Great Northern Hurdle race candidates, are engaged in the open hurdle race at the 'Marton meeting on Saturday. Lady Quex showed a glimpse of her true form in winning the sprint event the second day at To Rapa, There is no doubt she is a particularly smart mare over short courses. Winners of japing or flat events at the Marton, Egmont or Wanganui meetings are liable to be' rehandicapped in their encasements at the Auckland Racing Club's meeting next month. Mr. F. J. McManemin's early declaration of the weights for the Great Northern Hurdles, Great Northern Steeplechase and Cornwall Handicap will be appreciated by owners and trainers and the racing community generally. The form of Troilus in ■ the hurdle race at Oamaru on Saturday should be worth noting. He should be in the money if he shows his best form. Latet on be may make a trip to Auckland to take on tile North Island cracks in June.

Aussie's victory in the chief event on the first day of tlie Waikato meeting brings his winning total to £6770. Included in this amount tire the Hazlett Gold Cup and the Storey Memorial Gold Cup, each of the value of lOOsovs.

Record nominations have been received for the AVangnnui Jockey Club's winter meiting, to be held on May 16 and 18. Nominations this year total 405, as compared with 342 for the winter meeting of last year, an increase of 63.

No fewer than nine of the horses entered for the Great Northern Steeplechase figure in the list of acceptors for the Marton Steeplechase, to be run on Saturday. They are:—Brigadier Bill, Star of the East, Maunga, Motu, Mountain Crag. Vexatious. Braeman, Son o' Mine and Manderine.

Dermod. a four-year-old gelding by Limond from Doreen, von the Electric Hack Handicap of six furlongs at the Nelson meeting on Friday. The following, day his three-year-old full-brother, Kaha, was successful in the Linley Hack Handicap of a mile at Te Rapa.

Following are the Auckland horses entered for events at the Wanganui Jockey Club's winter meeting, to be held on May 16 and 18:—Valuation, Pompeius, Arikitoa. Brilliant Light, Gala Day, Glena Bay, Pendavies, Roman Abbey, Itipon Abbey, Wenday, Mithra, La Choucas, Day Guard, Pouri, Macroom, Value, Ned Kelly and Cybelle,

Horses trained by E. George were well in the limelight the second day at Te Rapa, Hipo and Lady Quex winning and Royal Finance filling second place. The New Plymouth trainer had not had a great deal of luck with his team during tho autumn campaign in this province and his successes therefore did not come out of turn.

Hipo is no\v at an age when deterioration in his form is to be expected, but though not eo good as he was two or three seasons ago, he is still capable of mustering up some dash He won the Bangiriri Highweight Handicap at Te Rapa on Monday in fine style. An objection was lodged by tho rider of the second horse for alleged interference in the straight, but it is very doubtful whether the incident affected the result.

One of the unlucky horses during the autumn campaign lifts been Standfast, who has run good races in his last three starts for nothing better than a third. He was made favourite for the Beerescourt Hack Handicap at Te Rapa, and, after being left some lengths at the post and running very wide at the turn, he finished sixth. With a good jump out he would certainly have troubled the winner.

Miss Mercia has disappointed her connections so often this season that her success iu the Redwood Memorial over a mile and a distance the second day at Nelson could not have been altogether anticipated, She had run second in a four-horse race the previous day over a mile. In the big race the second day she led all the way and just beat Rabbi by a head. Rabbi, won the Nelson Cup the first day. but in the Redwood Memorial he stumbled and nearly fell going out of the straight. This placed him in the rear of the field, but bo made up his ground quickly, and was close behind Miss Meroia entering the straight. He just failed to catch the leader in the run to ths post. The consistent Black Mint was third.

The heavy rain which has fallen during the last two days lias made the Riccarton tracks, very sioft, and there will be plenty of mud for some time.
