THE GREAT NORTHERNS.

HURDLES AND STEEPLECHASE DECLARATION OF HANDICAPS. The following handicaps have been declared by Mr. F, J. McManemin for the three chief events in connection with the Auckland Racing Club's Winter Meeting:— . GREAT NORTHERN HURDLES. Of £1750; 2J miles.

NOTES FROM WANGANUT.

MARTON MEETING PROSPECTS FORM GUIDE FOR AUCKLAND. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] "WANGANUI, Tuesday. Next Saturday the Marton Jockey Club's Winter Meeting will be held, and this will usher in the steeplechase season in earnest. Excellent acceptances have been received and some good racing should be witnessed. Mendip looks none the worse for his race at Masterton, and promises to be in great fettle for the Egmont meeting. There was talk this time last year of Bright' Glow being taken to Australia for the spring meeting at Randwiek, but she did not make the trip. It is on tho cards she will go over in a month or two to race at Bandwick in the spring. Bisox continues to do good work on the tracks, and there is every likelihood of thin sterling mare showing excellent form if taken to Ellerslie in June. The two-year-old Gasbag—Beauty Form gelding in F. Lind's stable will race under the name of Gasform. He looks likely to turn out above the average, W.' Rayner is beginning to let his two youngsters step out on the track, and both move nicely, especially Drastic (Absurd — Drask).) In view of the fact that he is engaged in the Great Northern Hurdles it will be interesting to see how Mister Gamp shapeß at Hawera. He is one of the most promising of the young brigade of hurdlers on this coast. There are not wanting signs that the Wanganui Jockey Club's .winter . meeting will attract good fields. The Wanganui steepleohase meeting has always been one of the most popular on the calendar, as it invariably provides excellent sport and the form shown by the jumpers often gives a line on the Great Northern meeting. Coolmint has proved himself one of the best hacks about, and if he is taken to Auckland for the winter meeting he will run well fin his engagements, which include the King George Handicap and tho York Handicap.

Alaric has shown ability to jump the big fences with the best of them, but he is not a genuine stayer. He is engaged in the Adamson Steeplechase the second day at Hawera, and, if he jumps as well as he has been doing in his schooling essays, he should take a lot of beating over that distance.

M. Gardner will take Royal Acre, Warflame and Potoaform to Hawera. The lastmentioned is a gelding by Potoa, and he is a likely-looking sort.

Brigadier -Bill is putting siioh dash into his jumping essays that he looks sure to be very hard to beat in the Egmont Steeplechase.

Mr. Len. Paul, of Wanganui, has three J earlings to be got' ready for racing next season. One is a filly by Lackham. out of Figritiya, and she looks a very promising sort, A gelding by Chief Ruler out of Admyra, and a filly by Catmint out of Charmeuse also look likely to turn out good. Kilburu has goiie on the right way eince returning from Auckland, and on the form he-showed up there he must be hard to bent in the hurdles at, Marton.

There's re fifteen left in the Marton Steeplechase, and there is material enough to provide a splendid race. Star of' the East, Brigadier Bill and Mountain Crag may find most, support.

Ruanui must run a good race in the Crcfton Handicap on his Feilding form. Royal Damon is said to be very fit, and should run well.
