ASSAULT BY MAORI.
TWO MONTHS IN GAOL
[CY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] TVHANOAREI, Tuesdny, A young native, A- Pirihi, appeared in the Magistrate s Court to-day charged with assaulting H. W. Hubbard. Senior-Sergeant O'Grady said, that Mrs. ■Hubbard kept a boarding house and Hubbard went round there at about 7 p.m. yesterday to see his children. While there Pirihi set upon him, causing him considerable bodily harm.
Accused stated that Hubbard came over to the. house in a drunken condition. When asked what ho wanted he started swearing and calling accused names. Accused was frightened that Hubbard would hit him and when Hubbard called him further names he attacked him. Irt passing sentence the magistrate, Mr. J. H. Luxford, said ho was not sure whether he would send accused to the Supreme Court where he would receive an adequate sentence. The crime of violence must be suppressed ana when people were found attacking persons past middle age the only thing to do was to impose a sentence that would act as a deterrent to others like-minded. Pirihi was sentenced to two months' imprisonment with hard labour.
