MILLION FROM WOOL.

"Large cheque for season.
-.LITTLE LESS. THAN LAST YEAR.
RECORD NUMBER OF BALES. $ "Although the 52,628 bales of wool sold .In Auckland this season constituted a record in point of numbers, the total realisation of £1,024.682 was £19,068 less "than that of last season. Viewed by (lie comparative standards of recent years, however, the result cannot but be regarded as eminently satisfactory.
Returns for the third and final sale . .of.the season, held on April 11, make pos,s i sible a review of the complete 1928-29 ■ wool-selling period in Auckland. In the three preceding seasons the final local sale was/held in .March, and its lateness .. this year was largely responsible for the ■ extreme smalhiess of the third offering, - 2124 bales of very mixed quality. Of these, 1855 bales were sold, realising £29,926, about £9OO moro than was obtained at the third sale last season, but very much less than tho realisation at the sales of 1926-27 and 1925-26. 'The average price was £l6 2s 8d a bale, and 11.8Q6d a pound. Four Yeani' Returns. The following comparative table gives .. tho complete returns for the current : season, -and those for the three preceding "'seasons Average a Bale. The average price. for the season was .'£2o 4s-4d a bale, and 14.016rl a pound. In view of the fact that the 1927-28 sellperiod was'one oi exceptionally high prices, the fact that this season s receipts .so. closely 7 approximated them, must, bo regarded as eminently satisfactory. 'That is taking into account, too, the fact that the number of bales offered was 52,628, compared with 47,070 in the previous 6eason, and 46,546 in 1926-27. These-figures in-themselves are a posixtive indication of the steady development sheep farming in the province, along- ' -tide of the expansion of dairying on a v.yery large scale. Reviewing the results -n'of the ' current and three preceding '' Seasons lends force to the plea of woolV'jjrokers for a better spaced sales roster .yiov Auckland. . The offering this season represented an increas.es of approximately 11.8 over last season, yet in spite ot .the continued growth of the Auckland clip there' remained the customary long lapso of time, about three months, between tho first and second sales, with another break— unusually long this ' season-of pearly two months between the second and final auctions.
