SHOOTING SEASON OPENS.

GOOD SPORT EXPECTED. AUCKLAND DISTRICT PROSPECTS. The shooting season in the Auckland Acclimatisation Society's district opens today. The season for pheasant and both Californian and Australian quail will remain open until June 30, while that for grey and mallard duck, spoonbill and black swan will close on June 16. Bags have been limited to 9 pheasants and 25 in all of duck and swan for each sportsman each day, while not more than 15 artificial decoys is allowed in any area of water less than 100 yards square. Shooting from power boats, which includes canoes and dinghies with outboard motors, is forbidden. This provision, of course, does not refer to moored vessels. The society lias issued a notico that all game loft in freezers at the close of the season must be removed within seven days after the season ends. Ducks are said to be plentiful all over the district aud good sport is anticipated to-day. A number of sportsmen have been gathering at the more favoured spots near Rangiriri and along the Waikato for several days, while considerable expectations are hold for duck-shooting on Arapuni Lake, where a flock has been seen at the lower end near the dam site. Reports from the society's rangers show that both quail and pheasant arc expected to provide good shooting. CONDITIONS IN WAIKATO. GOOD SPORT ANTICIPATED. Sportsmen in tho Waikato expect a good shooting season, and parties have already left Hamilton and other towns for the Rangiriri and Waikato Heads areas. Favourable weather has been experienced during the past few days. It is reported that ducks aro in good supply at Waikato Heads, Rangiriri, Te Kauwhata, and Lake Waikero, while Australian and Californian quail aro plentiful near Taumarunui. There is a fair number ot pheasants, principally in tho Raglan County. Some doubt is expressed as to the wisdom of proclaiming a close season for Pukeko.'as farmers near the swampy areas have been troubled by tho birds.
