POLAR SLEDGE DOGS.
WORK ON TASMAN GLACIER. DECISION BY GOVERNMENT. [BY telegraph.—own correspondent.] WELLINGTON, Monday. The Prime Minister has finalised the negotiations with Commander Byrd over the introduction of the expedition's sledging dogs to ihe New Zealand mainland, and Hie result has been communicated to Commander Byrd at his base in Little America, in tho Antarctic.
Tho Government cannot relax (ho quarantine regulations safeguarding the country against the introduction of disease into New Zealand, but it is prepared to recognise a certificate that the dogs wero free from disease on their shipment from Canada. When the quarantine poriod from this dale lias expired the dogs can be taken to Mount Cook for work on the Tasman glacier. "This is tho best we can do for tho expedition," remarked the Primo Minister, "and three months from now the dogs can get inLo tho snow country. They will be kept well away from sheep territory, under tho close supervision of an expert team of men, and confined entirely to tho snow country. Wo considered carefully the possibility of prejudicing tho sheepowners beforo coming to the decision, and while anxious to give every facility to Commander Byrd, this is tho best wo can do."
