WILY DETECTIVE CHIEF.
"A DIFFICULT SUBJECT."
Interviewers who waylaid Inspector Mackay, chief of tho Sydney detective staff, who returned to Sydney recently after investigating police methods for tho past nino months, found hivn a difficult subject. "What is your personal opinion of Scotland Yard?" asked one. "My word, it was a severe winter in tho Old Country," answered Mr. Mackay. "Tell us about police methods in England ?" "I'm very pleased to bo homo again." Mr. Mackay was too accustomed to questioning other people to bo easily drawn to discuss contentious matters himself. However, ho explained that ho was preparing a report for the Commissioner of Police, covering his visit and his conclusions.
"I suppose," said ono interviewer, "that you will propose some innovations?" "I never remember such cold weather as tho last winter in England," said Mr. Mackay.
