HELPING PRISONERS.
VALUE OF LONG SENTENCE. SUCCESS OF CLASSIFICATION. LONDON, Auril 20. " If magistrates feel that a sentence is necessary, I implore them to let tho imprisonment be sufficiently long to give the prison authorities an opportunity of applying remedial measures, which are most beneficial to prisoners," said the Homo Secretary, Sir William JoynsonHicks, at the annual meeting of the Discharged Prisoners' Aid Society.
" I know that this suggestion will hurt, and that pressure will be put on the Home Secretary to release such people; but, I will stand the racket." He added that the success of the classification in the Borstal institutions had produced the belief that it could be cairicd out in prisons for adults.
