MIGRANTS TO DOMINION.

EFFECT OF RESTRICTIONS. SMALL DRAFT ON TAMAROA. [BY TELEGRIPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON, Monday. The enforced curtailment of migration to New Zealand arising out o£ the policy of restriction lias during the past two years been more substantial than is generally realised. It is understood that the returns for the last financial year, which will be submitted to Parliament next session, reveal a reduction of approximately 75 per cent, on the number of new settlers assisted to the Dominion in the corresponding period of 1927. The present Government after its assumption of office extended for a further period the restrictions laid down by the Reform Administration, but it is anticipated that the whole position will be reviewed by the new Cabinet before the end of June. In terms of the restriction policy 60 asissted immigrants and 20 boys brought out under the Church of England scheme arrived at Auckland by the Tamaroa to-night. The assisted migrants, who comprise members of separated families, consist of 17 men, 22 women and 21 children. This is an almost negligible quota in comparison with the drafts of and prior to 1926-27.
