SHOCK FOR SLEEPER.
LIGHTNING WRECKS COTTAGE THE ROOF TORN AWAY. OWNER'S FORTUNATE ESCAPE. £BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] NEW PLYMOUTH, Monday. A startling experience befell Mr. L. H. Hoffman during tho height of the northerly storm which swept over New Plymouth during the night. He was sleeping at liis beach cottage at Omata, and at an early hour this morning he was awakened by a blinding flash of lightning which struck tho building, shattering the windows and forcing doors open. The roof was torn away and rafters were splintered like matchwood. Fortunately Mr. Hoffman escaped injury. Tho cottage presented a sorry spectacle this morning. Tho contents were scattered all about the floors, and a search has failed to reveal portions of the roof, which have disappeared.
